Ahh, special effects. It's the fun stuff, and What's Eating You? is a film with TONS of it! In this ever expanding part of the site we're going to explore the inner workings of how the many effects shots within the film were accomplished. So check back here often for more insights and downloads! A few examples of what we'll be exploring are the following.... |

We've found that one of the effects
that intruiges people the most is the creature.

| This terrain for the space scene was modeled, believe it or not, in Adobe Photoshop! Yes! A greyscale elevation map was created and then extruded. The result was brought into Electric Image 3D and texturing was added, along with a Photoshop starfield. | |

| During the fantasy section of the movie, Billy and Lisa must cross a high rock bridge over an endless chasm. To make things even more difficult, the Director, Evan Seplow, wanted this shot to be on a moving crane sweeping past our heroes! This meant shooting the live action elements (ie: the actors) with a crane and having the 3D computer camera match-move the real camera. Even the lens setting (wide-zoom) on the virtual camera and the real camera had to match! The actors were shot bluescreen in order to clip them out and put them into the 3D scene. Additional hand rotoscoping had to be performed in areas where they went beyond the blue matte. Color levels also had to be adjusted to make them believably blend into the virtual scene. | |
| The Bridge, and even the entire cave, was modeled in the 3D program 'Lightwave' and then imported into the 3D program 'Electric Image' for animation and rendering. | |
|
But that's not all. Since the people must move during the shot, the 3d and live action plates were then brought into the compositing program 'After Effects' to put them together! Difficult to understand? Check back here, soon there will be an interactive section that explains it all in much greater detail! |
